Today marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Field Marshal Prince Mikhail Bogdanovich Barclay de Tolly, one of the most distinguished military officers in the history of the Russian army.
I have written about Barclay before in this blog, and on account of this bicentennial I have published my translation of his Account of the Military Campaign of the Year 1812, a first hand memoir of his experiences as commander of the First Western Army during Napoleon’s invasion.
As far as I am aware, my translation is the first English translation which is publicly available. I hope that this translation will serve as a valuable resource to researchers and students of Russia’s experience of the Napoleonic invasion who do not read Russian.
